Western Lowland gorillas and Central chimpanzees are both found in Angola, in the area of Cabinda forests that lies within the Congo Basin. This region has the largest biodiversity in Angola, but years of civil unrest have made research and accurate census information on ape populations – the last of which occurred in 2003 – difficult to obtain.
