In the 1980s, Gabon hosted 40% of the world’s gorilla population, which has been dramatically reduced due to bushmeat hunting, timber and severe Ebola outbreaks in the northeast part of the country. However, both Western Lowland gorillas and Central chimpanzees still occur in areas spread throughout the country.
